Modern man is brought up being suspicious of anything sacred. In a way, and to a certain extent, it is luck that protects us from such misunderstandings. Nothing is worse for a mystic than to believe in mysticism, or for one to believe in religiosity rather than religion. Corruption of the purest notions is the worst thing possible. Over the past few years it appears that religious feeling seems to be reverting to its original purity.
Soon a student will be allowed to say ‘‘I am a believer!’’ without this sounding ironic to three quarters of his friends and half of his teachers. Today, fanaticism is once again present in all of our religions. This is a reaction to the damage caused by atheism. God is depicted as an accomplice to mankind’s unhappiness. A god such as this would discourage even the most lucid and demanding minds from religious belief.
