Modern man is brought up being suspicious of anything sacred. In a way, and to a certain extent, it is luck that protects us from such misunderstandings. Nothing is worse for a mystic than to believe in mysticism, or for one to believe in religiosity rather than religion. Corruption of the purest notions is the worst thing possible. Over the past few years it appears that religious feeling seems to be reverting  to its original purity.

Soon a student will be allowed to say ‘‘I am a believer!’’ without this sounding ironic to three quarters of his friends and half of his teachers. Signs of this change are multitude To mention but one: a great number of people now realize that contrary to what Karl Marx said, religion is not ‘opium’ but rather yeast .

In Chile, Haiti and the Philippines, Christians have brought down dictatorships; the idol of Karl Marx has crumbled, and behind his mask five million arrests by the KGB, massacres and the murder of Katyn have been revealed. We know about Gulags in a society where each person spies on his brother. Christians are the ones who are largely responsible for this reversal.

Today, fanaticism is once again present in all of our religions. This is a reaction to the damage caused by atheism. God is depicted as an accomplice to mankind’s unhappiness. A god such as this would discourage even the most lucid and demanding minds from religious belief.

The battle of atheistic Humanism is more like a fight against the most dangerous of alienations. Sometimes I hear people refer to themselves as ‘Witness of today’’ but very rarely do they state who or what they are witnesses to

I went from a God who avenges to a God of forgiveness; from a God who censors to a God of Freedom and Liberty; from a God who protects to a God who invites you to take risks ! I went from a God who is an enemy of life to a God who multiplies a thousand fold our desire to live.

The living God, that God full of love whom I discovered is a God who invites us not to be resigned or discouraged when faced with the misery of the world. He awakens, our dignity within us and tells us that each one of us is greater and more important than the entire universe. Each one of us is more precious than even Mozart.

We are responsible for the destiny of others.
